Course Overview

This is the perfect short course for working professionals in Singapore whose first language is not English and who want to participate skillfully in social conversations inside and outside of the workplace.

Choose what you want to focus on

The 48 hour course is divided into two 24 hour modules with each module developing a setting for using and improving your spoken communication skills. The first module of 12 sessions focus on improving your communication skills in everyday social situations. The second module of 12 sessions focus on improving your conversational skills in everyday workplace situations. You can decide to study one module or both, the choice is yours.

1. Application Procedure

Step 1: Take a Free Speaking Placement Test at Ascend Education Centre

To apply for this course you will need to take a free speaking placement test at our Centre with our professionally qualified teacher. The test will take 10-15 minutes. The purpose of the test is to find out your current level of spoken English. Your spoken language level must be at an Intermediate level – Upper Intermediate level as this course is for working professionals in Singapore whose spoken English is at a similar level. This way the participants in the course can communicate effectively with each other. In addition, all course participants must be a minimum age of 16 by the course commencement date. Please bring your IC/Passport with you for identification purposes.
Step 2: Decide if you want to enroll by completing Application Form and paying Application Fee

Upon receiving your speaking test result from our professional teacher and provided it is between Intermediate to Upper Intermediate levels, you can decide if you wish to apply for the course. The choice is yours. To apply for admission, you need to fill in the application form and pay a non-refundable application fee of $60 for administrative purposes.

Step 3: Sign Advisory Note, Private Education Institution (PEI)-Student Contract to protect your rights

The purpose of Advisory Note and the PEI Student Contract is to safeguard your rights as a student. We will explain the Advisory Note and contract to you and pass you one original copy of the contract signed by both parties.

Enjoy Fee Protection as an enrolled student of our Centre

We have an insurance arrangement to ensure that course fees paid by you to us are insured by Liberty Insurance Pte Ltd. The insurance protection serves to protect your course fees in the event that we are unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. Furthermore, the FPS protects you if we fail to pay penalties or return fees to you arising from judgments made against us by the Singapore courts.

We believe in customer choice and we believe you should be in a class where you are satisfied with the service we are providing you with. If you are unhappy, for any reason, with your course and you decide to withdraw within seven days of commencing your course, we will refund you 95% of your course fees within seven working days. 

Step 4: Pay Course Fee & Receive Course Materials

You will receive your course materials once you pay the course fees.

2. Course Aim

On this course, you will learn how to:

  • connect with your colleagues and clients by handling questions and answers more skillfully
  • manage conversations effectively, sensitively and respectfully in Singapore’s multicultural environment
  • present ideas orally
  • develop your listening skills
  • improve your use of vocabulary
  • improve your clarity and grammatical control

By the end of the course, you will have developed language skills necessary to:

  • Open, maintain & close face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or relevant to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, study, travel and current events/affairs)
  • Discuss and give opinions, views and reasons in social and work-related contexts
  • Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity in social and work-related contexts.
  • Use a wide range of appropriate vocabulary to talk about familiar topics in social and work related contexts
  • Use effective features of pronunciation at word and sentence level
  • Demonstrate effective grammatical control

3. Course Syllabus

The course is divided into two modules with each module developing a setting for using and improving your spoken communication skills. The first module of 12 lessons focus on improving your communication skills in everyday social situations. The second module of 12 lessons focus on improving your conversational skills for work. You can decide to study one module or two modules, the choice is yours. Below are the topics that are covered in the two modules.

Module 1: Everyday Social English

  • Socialising: Starting conversations, asking and answering questions and giving personal information
  • Travel: Asking for information, making requests and expressing preferences
  • Cross cultural social communication: Expressing opinions, agreeing and disagreeing, talking about customs and traditions
  • Food & Eating out: Making suggestions, talking about food and giving descriptions of food and meals
  • Shopping: Expressing like & dislikes, expressing opinions and asking questions about products
  • Leisure Time: Describing hobbies and activities, expressing likes and dislikes and talking about experiences
  • Fashion: Expressing preferences, making suggestions and expressing opinions
  • Health: Understanding Instructions, giving instructions and giving advice
  • Sightseeing: Asking for recommendations, understanding details, ask for details, interrupt politely
  • The Media: Talking about topical news stories, expressing opinions, agreeing and disagreeing
  • Living Abroad: Talking about accommodation, alternative accommodation, ask detailed questions about costs and legal requirements
  • Workshop for Module 1: Giving a short, simple individual presentation, evaluate your performance

Module 2: Everyday English for Work

  • Cross cultural business communication: Talking about business culture, describing similarities and differences, asking for information
  • Interviews: Talking about yourself, expressing opinions, asking and answering questions
  • Requesting Services: making appointments, be firm and polite, bargain and negotiate
  • Marketing: Describing things, talking about pros and cons, expressing advantages
  • Customer complaints: Making and replying to complaints, give advice, make suggestions
  • On the phone: Take and leave complex messages, check understanding, ask for clarification
  • Finance: Asking for range of services, asking for clarification and explanation
  • Advertising: Describing ads, expressing likes and dislikes, agreeing and disagreeing
  • Face to Face Meetings: participate actively in meetings, make, accept and reject suggestions, clarify viewpoints and correct misunderstandings, bring a meeting to an end
  • Talks: Understanding main ideas, take concise notes, listen to signposts; summarise effectively
  • Seminars: Understand how to give a well-organised seminar, present an argument, follow up a question, evaluate your performance
  • Workshop for Module 2: Give a longer, structured group presentation and evaluate performance

4.  Teaching Methodology & Materials

To achieve the key learning outcomes of this course our professionally trained teachers will provide topic-based language using authentic and adapted materials and motivating learner-centred activities such as role-plays, debates, mini-presentations and discussions in the classroom. This way, you will have ample opportunities to apply the language you need to know to speak with greater fluency, clarity and greater accuracy in a variety of social and workplace situations.

5. Teacher's Profile

Shauna Brennan,
Shauna is from Ireland and has lived in Singapore for over 4 years. She developed a love for teaching during her many years as a restaurant manager when she was heavily involved in the training and development of employees, and has recently completed a Diploma in TESOL from the London Teacher Training College. Shauna enjoys meeting people from all around the world and strives to develop a good rapport with those she works with. Her goal is to meet the needs of students and ensure they have fun during the learning process.

6. Certificate

You will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance by Ascend – The English Professionals upon fulfilling the attendance requirement of 75% or above by the end of the course. If you are not able to attend class for a medical or work related reason, please do inform us in advance so we can inform your teacher. Please note that there are no make-up lessons for lessons missed.
