1.  Course Overview

This is the perfect short course for working professionals in Singapore whose first language is not English and who want to improve key business communication skills they use in the workplace with a focus on improving participant’s soft skills when presenting, participating in discussions and emailing colleagues and customers.

Choose what you want to focus on

The 48 hour course is divided into 3 sixteen hour modules with each module developing a setting for using and improving your spoken business communication skills. The three modules focus on skills development while presenting, communication with colleagues and customers and emailing. You can decide to study one, two, three or all modules, the choice is yours.

On this course, you will:

  • Understand and use the key principles of Business Communication.
  • Organize and express your ideas verbally in a Business environment.
  • Learn and demonstrate the use of essential business vocabulary.
  • Develop and demonstrate essential Business Communication Skills such as making presentations, taking part in discussions and writing effective emails.
  • Learn and apply techniques for effective interpersonal communication in the workplace.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the communication skills necessary to:

  • Improve your speaking, listening and writing skills to be a more effective communicator with colleagues and customers.
  • Deliver persuasive presentations.
  • Become clearer and more confident when you speak with colleagues and customers.
  • Write effective email

3. Application Procedure

Step 1: Take a Free Placement Test at Ascend Education Centre

To apply for this course you will need to take a free placement test at our Centre with our professionally qualified teacher.

The test will take 30-45 minutes. The purpose of the test is to find out your current level of English. Your written language level must be at an Intermediate level as this course is for working professionals in Singapore whose English is at a similar level. This way the participants in the course can communicate effectively with each other. In addition, all course participants must be a minimum age of 16 by the course commencement date. Please bring your IC/Passport with you for identification purposes.

Step 2: Decide if you want to enroll by completing Application Form and paying Application Fee

Upon receiving your speaking test result from our professional teacher and provided it is between Intermediate to Upper Intermediate levels, you can decide if you wish to apply for the course. The choice is yours. To apply for admission, you need to fill in the application form and pay a non-refundable registration fee of $50.00

We believe in customer choice and we believe you should be in a class where you are satisfied with the service we are providing you with. If you are unhappy, for any reason, with your course and you decide to withdraw within seven days of commencing your course, we will refund you 75% of your course fees within seven working days.

You will receive your course materials once you pay the course fees.

4.  Teaching Methodology & Materials

To achieve the key learning outcomes of this course, our professionally trained teachers will provide functional and topic-based language using authentic and adapted business materials and motivating learner-centered activities such as role-plays, mini-presentations and discussions in the classroom. This way, you will have ample opportunities to apply the business communication skills you need to know to speak and write with clarity and accuracy in a variety of everyday workplace situations.

5.  Course Syllabus

The course is divided into three modules with each module developing a setting for using and improving your business communication skills.

Speaking Skills

  1. clearly outline your position
  2. state facts coherently and give reasons
  3. use logical linking words and discourse markers to build an argument
  4. check for understanding
  5. invite responses
  6. make suggestions
  7. develop and apply strategies to deal with different views and reach an agreement
  8. summarize your position

Emailing Skills

  • use appropriate language for beginning and ending emails
  • differentiate between language for formal and informal emails
  • structure an e-mail message
  • demonstrate clarity and coherence in layout and language
  • use phrases for linking, explaining and supporting ideas to ensure cohesion
  • choose the appropriate level of formality
  • alter the tone of an email
  • check for grammatical range and accuracy in writing

Presenting Skills

  1. plan a coherently structured presentation to communicate effectively 
  2. use your body and voice to get your message across
  3. use time-saving and effective words and thought groups for opening a presentation
  4. use time-saving and effective phrases and thought groups for outlining, organizing ideas and moving between sections in a presentation
  5. use effective fillers and small talk to engage your audience
  6. use effective techniques and phrases for clarifying and checking audience understanding
  7. use effective techniques and phrases to deal with problems and questions
  8. have the confidence to get up and do it

6. Teacher's Profile for Certificate in Business Communication Skills

Tim Green,
is from the UK. He qualified as a CELTA teacher here in Singapore. Tim believes in building a good rapport with his students and making his lessons as interactive as possible to encourage life-long learning. He enjoys helping students to improve their English and finds it enormously rewarding to see students developing their skills. Tim previously worked for a British Member of Parliament for nearly 12 years as Office Manager and Senior Research Assistant, and holds a Master’s degree in Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London.

7. Certificate

You will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance by Ascend – The English Professionals upon fulfilling the attendance requirement of 75% or above by the end of the course. If you are not able to attend class for a medical or work related reason, please do inform us in advance so we can inform your teacher. Please note that there are no make-up lessons for lessons missed.
